Two Surprises in One Day

Today I went out to eat, mainly because I forgot my lunch at home and I *really* wanted a chicken caesar salad from Panera. My stomach has been feeling good for the past week or so, so I must have been doing something right. Time for a little experiment!

I ate half the salad at work and had maybe half a teaspoon of dressing (which I know contains soybean oil). Nothing happened. Happy tummy, happy Aileen.

However, at home I had the other half and was a little more liberal with the dressing (maybe about a tablespoon, which is still not *that* much). About 45 minutes later my stomach started to grumble a little. So I went to check the salad and everything that comes with it for soy and peanuts (just for good measure, but there were none). Imagine my surprise when I saw that the croutons on the salad contain soybean oil and soybean lecithin! Now, I can’t say for absolute certain that the salad/dressing/croutons were the culprits, but the only other thing I had for dinner was some milk and Renola (I actually had the granola, not the bar, but for some reason they don’t list that on their web site …), and I had that two days ago and was just fine.

I highly recommend the Renola, it tastes awesome and has only a few ingredients. Yummy overall!

While I was looking for soy where I didn’t expect it to be (croutons, who would have thought), I remembered that I have a coffee creamer at work that I use every now and then. Imagine my next surprise when I discovered that the stuff I use does not contain soy at all!

The Fat Free French Vanilla contains a bunch of stuff that I usually avoid, but every now and then I allow myself some crappy stuff (Pumpkin Spice Latte is one of those guilty pleasures despite the fact that this article on Foodbabe.com almost makes me want to give it up … but then again I only have one every two weeks or so. So, discovering that it has no soy made the epic crouton-fail a little more bearable.
